NFPA 211 Chimney Inspection Report App
Complete compliant Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspections in minutes. 7 critical zones, creosote hazard classification, and instant homeowner safety summaries.
The 7 Critical Inspection Zones
NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances) mandates rigorous evaluation of the complete venting system. FlueSpect organizes the evaluation into 7 dedicated zones:
- Cap & Crown: Verifies spark arrestor mesh, concrete crown wash, overhang, and waterproofing against freeze-thaw spalling.
- Flashing & Chase: Step flashing, counterflashing, and storm collar seal integrity at the roofline.
- Masonry Structure: External brick, mortar joint tuckpointing, vertical cracking, and plumb alignment.
- Smoke Chamber & Parapet: Parged smooth walls, corbelled brick clearances, and transition into the flue.
- Damper Assembly: Throat or top-mounted damper mechanism, seal, and operational handle closure.
- Firebox & Lintels: Refractory brick, refractory mortar, fireback integrity, and steel lintel clearance.
- Flue Liner & Joints: Clay tile joints, stainless flex liner sizing, clearance to combustibles, and thermal shock damage.
Creosote Stages & Safety Verdicts
Creosote classification determines immediate fire hazard risk:
Stage 1: Soot & Ash
Fluffy, dry carbon deposits easily brushed away during standard maintenance.
Stage 2: Porous Flakes
Hardened, tar-like flakes requiring rotary mechanical whip cleaning.
Stage 3: Glazed Pitch
Hardened glossy fuel layer presenting extreme chimney fire hazard. Requires chemical treatment.
Based on zone results and creosote severity, FlueSpect calculates one of three deterministic safety verdicts: SAFE_TO_USE, MONITOR_REQUIRED, or DO_NOT_OPERATE_HAZARD.
Automated Repair Estimating
When defects are marked (such as a cracked flue liner tile or damaged smoke chamber parging), FlueSpect automatically applies pre-calibrated repair cost estimates to the report so homeowners understand next steps before you leave.
